Missile strikes rain down as Ethiopian Prime Minister surrounds citizens

Ethiopia contains a long history of violence and the separation of the majority of Ethiopia into 5 major groups, the Oromo, Amhara, Tigrayan, Afar, Somali, and a few more.

Following Abiy’s claims that Tigray attacked corresponding government military camps, chaos ensued. To this day, numbers are not exactly reported but estimates say several hundred thousand of civilians and troops were killed. Due to accusations of the massacre, human rights abuse, and claims of rape, this deadly situation has evolved from a civil war into a humanitarian crisis.

Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian prime minister, seized supply trucks to trap and strangle  the supplies of millions. The United Nations disagrees with current actions being taken by Abiy’s government as U.N personnel were forced out. Aiding systems, such as Doctors Without Borders and the Norwegian Refugee Council were also removed, proving the delivery of aid to be difficult.

According to the Ethiopian Herald.5 million citizens of Ethiopia are suffering and an estimation of 1 million citizens are also in inaccessible locations. The United Nations Security Council gathered today to discuss further implementations of the actions regarding the Tigray Conflict. In a press interview, the UK and the US currently seek peaceful approaches. Stated by the delegation of the UK, “[they were] focused on the neutrality of the Ethiopian and Tigray conflict rather than aggressive approaches like excessive military force from bigger countries”.

Despite battling this issue at hand, major powers of the U.N were held up on the ongoing conflicts between Russia and Ukraine during the conference, constantly discussing the withdrawal of soldiers and the nation (Ukraine) as a whole from NATO. The first priorities are Monetary funding programs, access to aid, and education, but it seems as if the onslaught of problems introduced to this committee led to a lack of conclusion.

However, the U.S and UK believe that disrupting the idea of national sovereignty will only bring upon ruin by imposing restrictions on the Ethiopian government. A temporary merge with their government was decided to be the best course of action by Western powers. “We wanted their acknowledgment and they still consider the TPLF a terrorist organization but in a way, want to approach this peacefully. The [Ethiopian] government has already admitted to their past war crimes and wants to cus on rebuilding Ethiopia” says the delegation of the UK.
