Conflict between Alibaba and Tencent VS. the Chinese government is growing! But the question is who is in the wrong? Tencent and Alibaba believe that the Chinese government is passing laws directed towards larger companies to steal their users' information. However, the Chinese government believes that the companies are using “consumer data unethically which is why [they] implemented a series of laws such as the personal information law”.
Tencent mentions that the Chinese government “hinders our companies and do not value corporation’s rights at all and we think that they need to because they are collecting a lot of data and they are only accusing us of collecting data.”
Alibaba explains that the Chinese government “obligates us, the companies, to give information about our users whenever they want.” Moreover, this will remove the safety of users.
The Chinese government and Chinese companies both rely on trust, which brings forth the problem of distrust with data privacy. If a customer chooses to trust the government, then many rules will be implemented to restrict security for companies. However, when they trust the companies the government loses power.
China has been implementing many laws which companies believe are trying to take information such as DSL (Data Security Law) which regulates what can be transferred and where it can be transferred too based on the classification level. Also, another law that was implemented by the Chinese government was the CSL (cybersecurity law) which results in data security in China.
